Does the beach still exist?

As days grow shorter and darkness keeps us inside, I wonder... does the beach still exist? The beach of expansive views and rhythmical waves and glittering warmth? I think we mostly don't even think about the beach this time of year. Be honest: do you?

We still find things to do outside as the season changes to fall. This is the time here in the midwest when we collect the leaves that litter our lawns, watch football games, and maybe find some good apple cider and a cinnamon doughnut to enjoy at the nearby orchard. Maybe on an unseasonably warm day, we play basketball in the driveway, or go on a longer walk with the dog. But the beach?

We notice the chill and the darkness, and start to hunker down inside. We start to prepare for Thanksgiving, and yes, it's time to go shopping for Christmas. We get out the warmer blankets, the pumpkin scented candles, and make pots of chili. Maybe we do have thoughts of the beach now, but the thoughts become the dream of the warm beaches far away from Michigan, maybe over spring break, if we are lucky.

The beach is still there. Our beach. I know it is. It's up to us to keep its beauty and spirit in our lives all year long, even as it becomes cold and the glitter goes away. Yes, I love all of those fall things. Especially the candles and cozy blankets. What if we went out and enjoyed the beach? What if we made a small attempt to witness it, feel it, and show gratitude toward it? I would venture to say that I'll bet the expansive views and rhythmical waves are still there for us to experience.

I've been spending a lot of time lately thinking about the "brand" of our company, Open Air Living. The name is based on the philosophy of friluftsliv - the Scandinavian way of living in the outdoors, no matter what the weather. I've been thinking about our purpose and mission connects to our short term rental properties in Frankfort, Michigan (which just so happen to be on Lake Michigan and a beautiful beach.) I've been wondering why less folks visit here as it gets colder. Is it because the beach disappears from their minds?

So here's to invigorating our connection to the outdoors, including making an effort to enjoy the beauty of the beach, even in the darkness and the chill. Bring your doughnuts and cozy blankets, and see what happens. Sunsets are still spectacular even when you have to wear a hat.
