This Is Our Story

Open Air Living represents how we live our best life - outside.
We are Mike & Heather Roth, and we love spending time outdoors, with activities like camping, hiking, and kayaking.
The concept of Open Air Living all began when we took the leap to purchase an Airstream Basecamp to take our outdoor adventures to the next level. Heather believes that all things, spaces, and people should have meaningful names (much to our family's chagrin), so before we set out on our first voyage, we set out to find the perfect name for the Basecamp. Heather's personal word consultant (Mom) suggested friluftsliv. Friluftsliv is a Norwegian word that roughly translates to "open-air living." Heather is Norwegian, and we both love the outdoors, so ... perfect!
Open Air Living (frilufsliv) means more to us than outdoor adventures. We incorporate the outdoors into our everyday lives, including cooking and dining, games and concerts, and celebrations with family and friends. Heather also loves to make spaces beautiful with design, both indoor and out. Whether it's a backyard space to enjoy a fire with a cozy blanket, or a room in our home with organic textiles and a view of our beautiful maple tree, intentional outdoor living is the basis of all we do.
These ideas led us to further exploration in Northern Michigan, and we fell in love with the town of Frankfort, along the Lake Michigan shoreline. We have two ongoing projects in the area, including our first foray into short-term rentals with two dwellings in Frankfort that are walkable to Lake Michigan. Our vision is to create several vacation rental options for people who value the outdoors and beautiful spaces in the summer of 2025. Thanks for being here – we hope to see you in Frankfort soon!
